Welcome to the exciting, demanding and fulfilling world of journalism
Journalism is among the most rewarding of occupations.
Today’s journalist deals with a huge quantity and variety of information, with complex legal and ethical issues, and with technology which is changing at lightning speed in all branches of industry.
The role of the journalist remains to inform, to enlighten and to explain, in a world which often seems confusing and contradictory.
Public thirst for news is unquenchable - all the more reason why journalism requires high professional standards.
Training is at the heart of achieving these standards.
The Journalists Training Organisation - a sector of the Communications and Media Industry Training Organisation (CMITO) - is responsible for designing and administering journalism qualifications for print, radio and television.
Our task is to work with our industry to develop a highly skilled workforce through promoting on-the-job training programmes and nationally recognised qualifications.
Our key work includes:
- developing unit standards and qualifications that capture the skills and knowledge required by our industry
- liaising with the 10 universities and polytechnics that deliver qualifications for journalists
- designing and administering training programmes that enable employees to gain qualifications in their workplace
- working on a one-to-one basis with companies to provide skills, knowledge and training
- supporting and monitoring the progress of trainees
- promoting journalism as an exciting, worthwhile and challenging career.
