The New Zealand Journalists Training Organisation (NZJTO) looks after the training of journalists working in print, radio, television and multi-media.
Our job is three-fold:
we supervise the training offered at registered journalism schools
we will, from mid 2009, operate an accredited workplace training scheme
we promote journalism as a career.
Workplace Training
The National Diploma in Applied Journalism (Level 6) is gained while working in a newsroom. This scheme - which has the full support of the news industry - consolidates and puts into practice the knowledge gained by studying at a journalism school.
Journalism Schools
We oversee the writing of unit standards connected with the National Diploma in Journalism (Level 5), the approved entry-level qualification to a newsroom in New Zealand. Seven polytechnics teach these units. As well, we have close links with three universities who offer journalism courses based on the National Diploma.
Journalism as a Career
Our National Certificate in Journalism (Level 3) is an introductory course for those thinking about journalism as a career or who wish to improve their writing and communication skills. Increasingly, students who study towards this course go on to gain the Level 5 qualification - and a job in a newsroom. We also have a range of Level 2 journalism units used by secondary schools.
